The Transparency International (TI), an international non-governmental anti-corruption organization, released the 2009 Corruption Perception Index (CPI) today. In this year, Macao scores 5.3 among over 180 countries and regions in the world and its global ranking remains the 43rd as it did last year.
Results show that the five countries with the top global ranking of integrity are New Zealand, Danmark, Singapore, Sweden and Switzerland (Singapore and Sweden score the same). Hong Kong ranks the 12th (same as last year) globally, while China and Portugal rank the 79th (the 72nd last year) and the 35th (the 32nd last year) respectively in the world.Based in Berlin, Germany and established in 1993, the TI is an international non-governmental organization striving to fight corruption and it plays a leading role in the global anti-corruption campaigns. Currently, it has established branches and liaison offices in around 100 countries and the statistics it has released often get attentions in the world.
The annual CPI was first established by TI in 1995. As a composite index, it is a composite index that compiles the data of a number of different surveys. Countries and regions which are evaluated by 3 or more of those surveys will be automatically listed in the CPI.
