The CCAC Participated in the 11th Asian Ombudsman Association Conference

The 11th Asian Ombudsman Association (AOA) Conference was held in Bangkok, Thailand between 2nd and 5th November. Led by the Commissioner, Cheong U, the CCAC¡¦s delegation comprising five members attended the conference and was invited to deliver a speech.

The theme of the conference was ¡§Role of the Ombudsman in the Process of Public Sector Reforms towards Good Governance¡¨. Chief of Cabinet of the Commissioner, Ho Ioc San, delivered a speech entitled ¡§Promoting Ombudsman in Civil Society: Macao Experience¡¨ on behalf of the CCAC. She introduced the CCAC¡¦s efforts and experience in promoting ombudsman to the public in details and answered attendants¡¦ questions. The delegates from other places thought that the diversified ways of promotion adopted in Macao served as good references for them.

Over 70 delegates from 20 countries and regions participated in this conference. The topics of discussion included ¡§Legal Reforms for the Good Governance in the Public Sector Delivery System¡¨, ¡§Reforming the Public Sector Grievance Redressal Systems¡¨, ¡§Promoting the Role of Civil Society in the Ombudsman¡¦s Charter¡¨, ¡§Safeguarding Human Rights¡¨, and ¡§Promoting the Mediation Role of the Ombudsman¡¨. The 4-day conference has provided a good platform for exchange of ideas among the delegates from different places and they all thought that it was very beneficial.

In addition, since most of the members of the AOA are also members of the International Ombudsman Institution (IOI), the IOI Asian Region Meeting was held concurrently. A Regional Vice President of Asian Region was re-elected as the office had fell vacant due to personnel changes. Finally, the new Chairman of the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission of Korea was elected by a unanimous vote.
